How do I know when it's time to get support?

Sometimes the way you’re feeling deepens gradually over time, so you’re not aware that you’ve reached the point at which therapy would help you. Here are some signs that may mean it’s time to talk to someone:

  • A continuous state of unhappiness or depression
  • Constantly worrying or feeling anxious
  • Problems sleeping
  • Experiencing emotional outbursts
  • Change in weight or appetite
  • Feelings of guilt and low self-worth
  • Abusive use of substances
What is the difference between therapy and counseling?
Counseling is the process by which a counselor helps an individual understand and solve problems to help him or her cope with mental or emotional stressors. Therapy usually involves talking about your situation in order to gain more understanding about issues such as mood, feelings, behavior, and ways of thinking.
How many sessions with a therapist will it take to get results?

Therapy sessions are usually weekly and typically last between 45 minutes and one hour. How many sessions are needed to achieve the desired results depends on whether the conditions are acute or chronic. Research points to six to eight sessions for resolution of acute issues. More time is usually needed for chronic symptoms. However, the needs of each client are particular, and results will vary depending on each client’s goals and their level of motivation and engagement.
